I wouldn't expect much in terms of "economic motoring" from the Taurus or Benz you mentioned. The oval generation Taurus was not noted for its reliability. The Benz combines questionable reliability with a high cost of maintenance - if the Volvo has been a headache, don't expect much more from the Benz. I guess of those choices the BMW is the smartest one, but I'm not sure by how much.
The late '90s and early '00s were not - IMHO - a great time for cars. Lots of fancy new electronics, emissions requirements, service requirements, etc. that the industry hadn't quite worked out lead to a lot of cars that are problematic to own used, especially higher-end ones. If you are looking for something affordable that isn't going to kill you with required dealer involvement, I would look to an older car, or at least something that was coming to the close of its life in 2000 rather than just getting started.
