They kept making the old Cherokee until just recently - essentially the same as your '87 with minor improvements in & out. It's not exactly a luxury car, but durable & capable. Truly, though, the Grand Cherokee isn't that much different, and basic GC with the I6 shouldn't be much if any more expensive to run than the regular Cherokee. The V8 adds some complexity, but that's easily avoided. ;)
If the timing belt & suspension put you off, I'd skip an Audi altogether. You won't find a single one that doesn't need one or both or isn't in some other way in need of massive work. People dump them when they become expensive and that's that. OTOH if you're capable with a wrench they ultimately aren't tough to work on, so finding one that you know needs that stuff and then putting a grand into it can make for a cost-effective vehicle. IMHO, I'd look for 1.8Ts over the V6 - better fuel economy, easier maintenance, and ultimately capable of a lot more power. Kind of a no-brainer. ;)
