I'm new on this board, so don't throw too many tomatoes at me, but I think the Audi 2.7T does compensate for altitude. At least the 1.8T does - my Passat loses no power up to 5000 feet (as high as I've been), and a recent Motor Trend shoot-out of Euro wagons claimed the A4 1.8T was breathing down the neck of the 540i once they got up into the mountains. In the 1.8T, boost is maintained compared to absolute, not relative pressure, and since it is a LPT design there is plenty of reserve boost available from the turbo. I would imagine the same technique is used in the 2.7T, but this is only a guess on my part.
Now, the A6/A8 4.2's are normally aspirated, and it would make sense that a turbo would crush them as you climb. I would also imagine an Aero with manual would kick their butt at any altitude. :-)
