Passat wagon or 9-5?

Just finished a 2,000 mile road trip in a 1993 Camry wagon with 120k. As always, the car performed flawlessly...if slow, a bit uncomfortable, and a little tight inside (2 adults, one infant, 2 large dogs, and luggage). We had plenty of time on the road to dream up alternative wagon scenarios to replace this one. Of course the 9-5 came up -- we've owned 2 SAABS -- but also the Passat wagon.
So, I'm wondering if anyone on this BB has experience that might be useful in our comparison. Our criteria are a blend of cargo, economy, safety, reliability, light towing (a pop-up camper that we do not yet own but hope to soon) and fuel economy. To try to make this more of an apples-to-apples comparison, we are looking at the 9-5 Linear 2.3t and the Passat 1.8T. We'd buy used, not new.
Thanks!
