We also strongly considered the Passat before buying our 9-5. Here's what we found:
- rear seat space is much better in the 9-5
- Passat "seems" to be more sluggish (I say seems, but I don't know the actual performance stats). We drove the 1.8T (I also owned a Golf GLS 1.8T prior to the Saab, so I'm very familiar with this engine)
- we like the look of the Saab better
- insurance on the Saab was MUCH cheaper (at least in the Toronto area)
- here was the biggest consideration: Saab service vs VW service - there is absolutely no comparison. I simply hate the customer service that I received from VW - they really have no respect for the customer. If you go over to vwvortex.com, you will see what I mean. In my nearly 2 yrs of Saab ownership (I also bought used), I've never had anything but positive experiences at both the nearby Saab dealers.
So, no regrets getting the Saab over the Passat, EXCEPT I should've gotten the Aero instead of the LPT.
