Long-time Saaber Needs a New Car

Hi, Friends. Merry day after Christmas.
I'm a long-time Saab enthusiast. Went from MANY classic 900's to a 9000 by necessity, (currently have a 1994), and I'm in the market for a new car. Mine runs great, but there's an exhaust smell coming from the heating area and I'm driving my 2-year-old around in this car and nobody seems to be able to figure out the issue.
In addition, how much more money do I want to sink into a 1994 9000 CSE with 131,000 miles on it?
My question: What year/years is/are best for me to consider when looking at an older model (2000 or sub) 9-5 (or 9-3)?
My Saab indy mechanics told me that they HATE the 9-5. Hate 'em. Steering me and every other person who asks away from them. Say they have repair issues constantly and they know a lot of formerly enthusiastic dedicated Saabers who have walked away from Saab all because of the GM-influenced 9-5.
On the other hand, I have friends who love theirs'.
Thoughts and advice/guidance?
Thanks very much!
Julia
