Surprised to hear the mechanics 'HATE' the 9-5, maybe its because they don't get much business from 9-5 owners who never have problems! I would think a mechanic would love to make money fixing a car.
Your car doesn't seem to have many miles on it for a '94, but being a 13 yr old car you can probably expect to start fixing more and more things on it over time. But if you get another used car, you run the risk of inheriting someone elses problems, whereas at least you know your car.
Anyway, my 2000 9-5 Aero is a great car, I drive my 2yr old & 5yr old in it all the time, will go anywhere in the car without hesitation. Many on this board will say the 2002 and newer 9-5's are the one to get, and probably true, but that doesn't mean the 2001 and older 9-5's are not good cars, in fact they are great cars. I would say really the only things to make sure if you purchase one is to ensure that the DIC was replaced with the latest one and software is up to date, and regular maintenance like oil changes have been done. You will hopefully have no problems other than normal maintenance.
Good luck on your search.
