There are two things you are asking in your question:
1) Reliability. Im biased, so I probably cant give an impartial view on this. My 9-5 is as reliable as any car I have ever owned. Of course I worship the Maintenance Gods. This applies to any brand, any model. Maintain it properly, and it will last.
2) Cost of maintenance & repairs: Saabs are no different than any other brand in the premium market, or really Honda or Toyota. Toyotas and Hondas have a percieved reputation of durability, but when it comes time to get them serviced or repaired they are as expensive or more. My local dealer performs the typical 10k service on my 9-5 (oil, tire rot, etc...) for about $100. My freind with his Camry pays $150. I paid $900 for the dreaded 60k service. The Camry...$1200. My transmission services are $120. Jiffy Lube for the same service is $120. Sure parts can be a bit more expensive, but they are still less than BMW, Audi, etc (Just checked Autozone for alternators: 9-5=$270, BMW 330i=$335)
With the right indy (Saab speak for independent mechanic that specializes in Saabs), or in my case my dealer, you can get it serviced for the same shop rates as any brand.
