I have a 2002 Arc and I love it. I can go to car shows and look at hundreds of new cars and come back home and think "you know, I'm really happy with my car and see no need to own anything else."*

*err...but I do like the new BMW M5. That is quite nice. :-)

In answer to your question:

*The 2002 9-5 is a reliable car. However, unlike other people on this board, I believe it still is a notch of reliability lower than a Japanese car.

*The Saab is a car that requires more "love." That means attention and timely maintainance. Typically, quite a lot of problems will give you warning--the car is precisely manufactured--anything that suddenly feels a bit "off" is a warning that needs to be taken seriously. Because of this, I feel that you have to understand, appreciate and take an interest in your car more than most people will with their cars....

*Fortunately, that's easy. The Saab community is awesome. This board is awesome. Every problem that's ever been experienced has been diagnosed and the cheapest and best solution found.

*I feel that normal maintainance costs are more expensive than other cars. On the other hand, I feel that things that "go wrong" will be just as expensive on a Saab as anything else. (A water pump replacement is going to be $500 on a Saab or a Honda.)

*Car dealers naturally inflate their parts and service costs. I seem to perceive, however, a bigger inflation by Saab dealers. If a Honda part can be bought somewhere for $50, the dealer might charge $100. A $50 Saab part might be $175 at the dealer though. Service prices are likewise higher.

*For this reason, I'd recommend finding a Saab independent mechanic.

*I'd also recommend keeping a savings account with $2,000 in it just for emergencies. It'll help you sleep better at night. :-)
