I bought my first 9-5 with 56K miles on it. It now has 125K. Over that time, the only significant non-maintenance repairs I've had to make were: Replace the turbo at 96K miles; replaced a DIC at 79K miles; a serpentine belt failed and took out a couple of oil supply lines (belt was due to be replaced when it failed; dampers; and quite recently have replaced the alarm battery ($19). The remainder of the the work I've done or had done was primarily maintenance, or replacement of components due to normal wear and tear (tires, battery, brakes, etc). I also had the seller replace a faulty SID at 56K miles and am due to have it fixed now.
All told, I've probably spent around $2500 on these repairs over the past 4 years. With the exception of a couple of Bonneville's, my other vehicles have all had a more issues over the same length of service. So I don't understand the "reliability" issue. To me $600/year or 4 cents/mile isn't that much considering the bargain purchase price I paid for the car.
So when it came time to buy another vehicle, I bought an CPO'd '04 wagon with 19K miles on it.
They're good cars -as long as you have a trustworthy dealer, or indy to take it to when needed.
