...which was also the "facelift" year.
The updates included:
larger alternator, battery is now cooled,
optional Bi-Xenon headlights (neat), arking Assistance (also neat), and Rain Sensing Wipers (VERY cool!). Main instrument cluster now with non-replaceable LED lighting.
5-speed Automatic trans (2003 & later got the paddle shifters)
new brakes, larger discs on both the Arc and Aero, including ventilated rear discs.
ESP - Electronic Stability Program. Uses ABS and TCS to prevent slides and skids. Standard on Arc & Aero, optional on Linear. May have been standard on all in later years.
Front steering assembly now aluminum. Uses bolt-on integral hub and front wheel bearing assembly.
New subframe mountings, front subframe 20% stiffer, larger anti-roll bars.
Integrated front bumper, changed to the badging, better impact protection inside and out, two-stage airbags, ISOFIX (LATCH) child seat attachments.
The V6 is a great motor. Just be absolutely certain that the timing belt is done at 60k. AND change the timing belt tensioner, guide roller, and water pump while you're in there. An extra few hundred paid out here will prevent s $6,000 headache later.
I just picked up a 2002 Arc with 84k on it, and it's great. I had my mechanic do the timing belt, tensioner, roller, thermostat, water pump, oil pump cover, serp belt, and pulley, and it runs great. The mechanic said that it was obvious that the timing belt had NOT been changed.
Shop around a while. Don't jump unless you really need to. I never thought I'd be able to afford a 2002 Arc, but my patience was rewarded with a bargain on this one. You might be able to afford something even newer...
