I have had great luck with my 2000 lpt, currently at 221,000+ miles, but I tend to agree with erring on the side of caution.
If it was an absolutely unbeatable deal (i.e. no risk of losing money) I would say buy the car, own it and maintain it into the summer, then decide a month before school re-starts if you have confidence in her taking it a few hendred miles away. If the answer is "No", you then re-sell it and buy something that gives you more confidence.
I am not sure $6k is a great price for a 1999, even one with only 60,000 miles. I have started monitoring the resale value of my 2000 in preparation for the day when I significantly reduce insurance coverage because the car's market value is too low to justify present limits.
