The car I bought in college (with co-op money - Northeastern U) was a '90 Camry with no options other than A/C. There was nothing to break, it was inexpensive to purchase with 88k miles, and it was big enough for my bass guitar gear. A Saab would have been much more fun, no doubt, but I was shopping for a car that would give me the least amount of trouble after a nightmare experience with a mid-80's Sentra. I bought my Saab once I finished grad school, eyeing the wanted lists for 3 years until I got out of school.
If you're daughter's in school and paying her own $, she should look at a car that will be cheap to own. Saabs are great cars, but a used Civic or Subaru is going to have cheaper maintenance and insurance costs. Unless she wants to learn some basic DIY repairs, which would change the calculus a bit. The availability of a local good mechanic in FL may be an issue as well as others have pointed out.
