Personally, I wouldn't run an automatic transmission without oil in it. The front pump may not like it? (I'm also the type that pre-fills the engine oil filter before installing it). I've done the 4 quarts, drive a while, drain, and repeat routine. Put a couple of cases of Toyota T-IV through it since I've owned it and it's flushed out good. I drain the transmission with every engine oil change so the transmission oil looks new. I still haven't had the transmission software upgrade done yet.
