I'm not sure how the steering can "quit" and the engine keep running. There's a mechanical (belt) connection there, nothing electrical to "immobilize". Are you certain that the engine was still running?
I doubt that the issue is with the anti-theft and immobilizer circuit. It sounds to me like something is causing the motor to quit, which brings everything else down with it.
Until you can get the code scanner on it, check for a loose belt, vacuum lines off, electrical connectors and wire issues, basic stuff. You might find something loose that pops off at inopportune moments, causing the problem.
Also, never, ever, pressure wash the engine bay. I don't know that this happened, but there are a variety of electrical connections under the hood that, if water gets into them, can cause all sorts of issues, and pressure washing, and even a just from a regular hose, can get water past seals. Keep this in mind.
