Actually, everything is as I posted - the engine was running normally even while everything else was locked up.
Also he checked the temp and pressure guages and they were normal. A/C was still working, too.
My first response was also that the engine had died - but that was not the case. He had to actually turn the engine off.
My second thought was also that the belt had broken - but it started right up after he turned it off.
With those two possibilities eliminated, it seems to me that it HAS to have something to do with the anti-theft system. The alarm did go off for no reason several times about two weeks ago.
