Interesting you say your car got smoother with low octane fuel. I have a 2001 V6 and while it's definitely drivable with regular fuel in it, it runs like sh*t. I definitely notice muuuch more influence from the turbo with premium fuel, and I have stalling issues in the morning starting the engine cold on regular fuel, so I stick to the good stuff. It's also much quieter and more refined feeling with higher octane. But we're comparing apples to oranges with the V6 and I4.
As for listening to the radio with your door open, take the key out of the ignition and hit the power button on the radio. It works without the key in the ignition, so no ding if you have the door open.
