Right now, 2004's seem problem free because they're pretty new. Your car is at an age where you've basically amortized the purchase value and you're now just paying maintenance costs. For the most part, it's cheaper to fix a car than buy a new one, but it is also less convenient. So it depends what works for you. We've been on the cusp of 9-5 purchase for about 2 years now (hence I monitor this bb), but it's been cheaper to keep the C900 going in spite of the repairs (and we've done everything). I keep good records and the total amortized purchase + maintenance costs of that car are about the same as leasing a Honda Civic...
While there are good deals on cars right now, that is bound to continue for a while... the deals may get better if GM implodes or if the new 9-5 is ever released... so it depends what your needs are... but the "you'll never recover what you put in it" part is true...
