I've owned Volvos, Honda, Mitsubishi.. and Saabs. Bought my first Saab because it was cheap (used) and have owned 5 of them since. All my Saabs have been as reliable as the japanese, provided you find a good independant mechanic. Even an Accord, when maintained at the dealer, can be expensive to maintain..
I've bought a 2003 9-5Wagon this spring, at 75k miles, at $10,000 and have put over 30k miles on it in 7 months, no problem, other than a thermostat and a temperature sensor ($19.95)
It is fun to drive, especially in winter, quick, confortable, and reliable.
Saabs depreciate because they're unknown, have bad reputation (because of some bad years (first GM years) and people are afraid to buy them. I live in Canada, and even use BMW do depreciate alot.
So, don't be afraid. You'll make yourself a big favor.
