Serpentine Belt & Pulleys from a D-I-Y'er Posted by MI-Roger [Email] (#882) [Profile/Gallery] (more from MI-Roger) on Sat, 14 Feb 2009 10:48:53 In Reply to: Cabin air and engine air filters, serp belt service, bill h., Sat, 14 Feb 2009 08:25:08 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I replace the belt and top most idler puley at 60K mile intervals. The tensioner pulley (and tensioner itself) and center idler pulley (the most difficult to replace) can last 120K miles.
1) Drive car onto ramps, then remove the plastic belt guard under car. Four screws from underneath and one screw in passenger wheel well secure this belt guard.
2) Place floor jack under car with wooden block on saddle. Raise jack to snug it tight against cast aluminum oil pan.
3) Remove the large aluminum engine mount yoke.
4) Use a 1/2 drive extension bar to pry belt tensioner toward radiator (there is a 1/2 square recess cast into the tensioner body), then secure it in forward position by placing a 3mm hex wrench in the hole provided by Saab in the tensioner body just for this purpose (search for this small hole first).
5) Remove belt. Remove top/rear idler pully. Replace pulley with new. Replace belt with new. Gently release tensioner to hold belt.
6) Reverse steps 3 thru 1.
