The roof rack is designed for about 200-220 pounds. If you're just going a short ways (my local HD is about 8 miles, the next one about 18) you can put a lot up there and be OK. However, I once carried two windsurfers (long boards back when they each weighed 40 pounds or so, a Laser sailboat, masts, sails and booms for all, totaling 240+ pounds on the roof of our '84 C900 to from Marblehead, MA to Cape Cod then over to Nantucket on the ferry, then across the island. Four people in the car. Also did lots of runs to the Cape with four sailboards on top with all masts, booms, sails, etc., and four people inside (the same C900). At 75 mph, 25 mpg, no worries.
For longer runs with a load, or to avoid multiple trips, a utility trailer is an amazing tool, especially if you haul landscaping materials, brush, and have to take your own trash to the dump!
