Good point on putting lumber on the roof. I was actually hauling Tuff Board, a wood-like PVC product for exterior trim. I have trim rotting off the house (too many shade trees, too much $$$ to take them down right now) so I elected to use this stuff. It's quite flexy and fit easily inside the car, except for some overhang.
I also lack cross bars on the roof rack, so the ladder fit nicely angled across the rails but the lumber wouldn't have been quite so easily attached with a limited number of bungees and velcro straps.
If anyone has some spare cross bars, let me know :-)
