If you post on the 9-5 board instead and also use the search function to search for the heater flap problem, you will find lots and lots of info about it.
In one way, you can't blame Karp if they have a set rule in only doing it the "right" way instead of the "other" way.
It is by now a well known problem with the broken shaft and it has been different repair solutions coming up through the years but only about 5-6 years ago, Karp's solution was the only one out there.
Now for the last 2 years, even Saab have manufactured a repair sleeve that can be used IF!!! the shaft is broken at the right point. It sounds like your car could be repaired with that sleeve, which is good.
