If memory serves, there was a TDI in the prior generation Passat, including the wagon.

Not sure how many of them there were, which might make them a little costly for their age and mileage. I also think there were some issues with oil pumps in those particular TDIs (not the Jetta though for some reason).

Me personally? I just took delivery of an 09 Jetta TDI Sportwagen and couldn't be happier. It's a bit smaller than the 9-5 perhaps but only by a nudge. It drives like the 9-5 and my beloved 9000 CSEs too.

I'm happy to have a car that sort of takes the spiritual place vacated by those cars. The 9-5 was great but got smooshed only a few months after I bought it -- unbelievably cheaply -- although I never felt the seats or the economy were up to snuff in that V6 model.
