Then they believe the bad stuff means all Saabs are unreliable. People searching for info on Saabs find places like TSN, don't realize they are problem-solving boards, and see all the problems. Then you have owners who take their Saabs to techs who don't know the cars and wind up with incorrect diagnoses and repairs. And there are dealers who rip people off, too.
People who see our Saabs in the yard or who know I'm a Saab-head ask me why, usually including "aren't Saabs unreliable or expensive to own?" in their comments. And I explain...
First Saab was an '84. Kept it 20 years. Beyond normal wear and tear maintenance (tires, exhaust, brakes, filters, oil, etc), it needed one clutch, a radiator, a blower motor, few other things.
Our 4 present Saabs (two 9Ks, a '99 9-3 and '03 9-5) all bought used, have been quite reliable. OK, they've had some "known Saab issues," or stuff that can fail on any car, they are basically fine. And with mileage ranging from 95K to 175K the "once in the life of the car service is expected.
OK, I do 90% of the work myself, which helps, but basically it's drive 'em, maintain them properly and they just keep on running.
FWIW, listen to SWEDECAR on the oil pan. I'm guessing it's not the pan. Clean the engine, then look for leaks from further up.
