Here are the total number of issues that I have had with my 2001 9-5 in 9 yrs of ownership, since new (well, actually a dealer demo with 5000 miles when I bought it but still qualified for new lease programs):

1. SID replaced under warranty during the first year, during an oil change visit. 8yrs later, not a single pixel missing;

2. Fuel pump recall in 2007; a plastic part had to be replaced by a metal part. The plastic piece broke when my wife was driving it a month after the recall notice arrived in the mail. LOL.

3. Serpentine belt replaced in 2006 at 65k miles as preventive measure, but the dealership mechanic may have done sub-par work, put in the short belt making the car less quiet than before . . . and the new belt broke 25k miles later in 2009, taking the water pump with it. There was a month/1000 miles or so warning with the belt noise/squealing, but I couldn't figure out what it was because I thought I had replaced the serpentine belt only 25k miles before.

4. Theft alarm ran out battery in 2009 (8yrs into ownership), so I looked up the board here and removed it. Dealership used techII to disable the message display at the next oil change.

That's the sum total of repairs that I had in 9 years of ownership. That in my opinion is outstanding reliability. Gas, oil change, battery, tires brake pads and rotors are normal maintenance items, and they are no more demanding than other cars of comparable weight. My wife's Toyota Highlander eats brakes and tires faster than my 9-5 wagon.

What the car does seem to need more attention than a typical Toyota/Honda product is head light . . . which, once you figure out how to replace, takes only 5min and $7 in a year even if you have to replace one headlight each year! It's a cheap insurance for having Daylight Running Light and make yourself more visible in traffic.
