More than half a decade ago, I lived about 50 yards up a hill that was about 25 miles outside a major city. My FWD car had no difficulty whatsoever driving most other places, but coming home would be difficult climbing the hill that was not thoroughly ploughed. The town also had a tendency to dump a pile of snow several times as high as precipition; i.e. over a foot high when there is 5" of precipitation. Guess where that snow bank was? right in front of the drive way. How would you like coming home from family Xmas party, and spend 4hrs shovelling before being able to get in the house?
Snow does not always take place at night when your car is home. It can snow in day time when you are already out!
Holiday seasons in North America tend to be deep in the winter. One can easily cross several several weather zones in a day visiting family and friends.
There is no law saying every family can only own one house. Many people have country get-away homes that can be deep in the woods or up the mountain deep in the snow country. Many primary residences can have private driveways longer than 50yds. Unless you are advocating everyone should own a bobcat, getting a plough guy on those snow days can literally turn into multiple days of waiting if you don't have an SUV to get out of your own drive way.
