Don't bother. Do you really thing the delaer will check the car and say, "I'm sorry, this car is no good".
If you buy a SAAB certified used car with a good, long warranty, you are probably okay, because then they might check it, and will not certify it if they know it is bad. The dealer has a piece of that warranty and won't want to burn themselves.
If you can have an independent mechanic check it and are willing to pay, they must at least remove the valve cover (1-2 hours) or the oil pan (more labor time.)
People on this board say sludge ended as a problem w/2004. You can also protect yourself by insisting on seeing service records. People here say that if the oil has been replaced every 5000 miles with full synthetic oil, it is not likeley to sludge.
