I prefer the 5spd manual, and do not find the clutch heavy at all. That said, many of my other manuals have been vans or trucks. The saab 9-5 clutch is light years lighter than the '95 volvo 850 clutch we had at the same time. I used to drive it in Boston rush hour daily. I also think it is lighter than the Acura Legend 5spd I owned prior to the saab.
My '99 has 160k on it (original clutch), and suffers from the weak synchros that the early (pre -00's?)had. It is a pretty clunky shift that needs more tenderness than I'd like. It's too bad, because it's an expensive fix, that I can't justify fixing, and it is a hassle b/c it doesn't make it popular for my wife who drives a stick fine. Sometimes reverse is a bit of a PIA.
The auto is probably a better all round package w/the turbo, especially w/the drive by wire, etc. It gets harder to justify the manual, especially if you have to put up w/a more borderline one. If you prefer a stick, you w/probably still prefer a stick. I do.
