The 2006 and later 9-5 is one of only two cars I ever have driven where the automatic clearly is superior to the manual, especially in the area of matching gear ratios to the torque curve. That's why I bought the auto, a very good (Aisin,I think) five speed, the same one used by VW and Audi at the time. The other dog manual was a mid-1980s German Ford Sierra, sold here as a Merkur.
The 2006 manual 9-5 I test drove was stiff, clunky, sloppy and very poorly matched to the HOT 2.3 engine. It was especially bad compared to the snick-snick gear boxes I had loved in BMWs and Hondas.
