That's what I figured. Although, i don't agree with the head gasket diagnosis.
Dollar for dollar, you never get back what you put into service. So the idea of "bringing it up to condition" for sale is flawed.
This is also a good time to reflect on the lease vs. own cost. I don't think I was terribly hard on the car and I sure as hell put in a lot of money into it during my 5-6 years of ownership.
I purchased this 03 Aero in 05, for $15K with 55K on the clock from a wholesaler. Checked out fine. It was certainly a fine automobile in 05 but soon thereafter the competition grew in size and packed on gadgets. In my hand I have a three page job printout - less prices - from my Indy. The three pages in just the last four years of record since they had a crash that wiped out records in 2007.
Thinking out loud:
15K base, ignoring tax, plus shop bills... let's call it 3.5K ( the larger jobs I remember were alternator, subframe bushings, 60K, belt/pulley, strut towers, rear struts, a number of oil leaks, coolant, electrical issues) add to that wear and tear items 3K (three sets of tires, two sets of rotors/pads, flexpipe, mounts, belts, etc) and cost to remove and replace. I did whatever I could in my driveway, when I had one, that's PCV, bypass, blowoffs, mounts). Now, I'm at 21.5K for 6 years of ownership. How much money would I have to have pored into this thing to have it in "good condition" at this point in time for a sale?
21.5K less approx 2.5K sale = 19/6 = $3,166 / 12 = $263
