leasing is not a cost effective way to own a car. But, I have noticed that often the premium you pay on a low rate lease + residual is not much more than you'd pay to buy outright (maybe 2-4k?) + has the safety factor of being able to test out + reject a lemon...
Your description of your car sounds like it's needed more consistent basic maintenance + the shortcomings there are coming back to bite you. Honestly, it sounds expensive, though perhaps some of the problems are more minor than they sound.
At the low end, your car is worth a bit over $1k for parts, so that sets the lower bound.
Usually fixing a car is more cost effective than buying a newer car. In your case, it might not be. You'll need to evaluate that...
