So I am the proud owner of my second Viggen. Had the first one for 3 years and let it go with only 30k on it - steel grey coupe - loved that car. Now my wife has had a black 4 door Viggen for probably 4-5 years and we've probably put 70-80k on it - currently 150k. Never really had any problems with it - changed the oil religiously with synthetic, did plugs, maybe replaced a slave cylinder. Pixels on computer look like the little lcd on the wrist of the predator - can live with it. On our 3rd set of rims - love the way the stock Viggen wheels look but they bend when the wind blows. Headlight relay went out and chased it for a bit but got it fixed. They spec'd a bad wheel. Overall, i have to say i am satisfied with the cars reliability. Not quite a honda civic, but reasonable.
I love the 9-5 Aero, and have been considering getting a sedan and/or a wagon. One of us gets a Viggen, the other an Aero - what a happy yuppy couple we would be!
I'm prefacing this saying i love my Saab Viggen, and would pick up another silver coupe in good shape in a heartbeat. But I'm doing research and I am reading some really disturbing reviews on the reliability of the 9-5 Aero. The reliability scores are in the toilet. Even non viggen 9-3's. The list goes on and on about people that have had so many problems and have shelled out tons of cash to fix these cars. Fun to drive, comfortable, styling - all great. But the break down like Viggens bend wheels apparently. I think i'm seeing more issues with Linears and SE's than Aeros and maybe thats because of the engine that it shares with the Viggens.
So whats the deal with these? We're gonna have a kid soon, I want a nice aero wagon for our little family to get around in - trips to the mountains and family in other states, road trips - the whole nine. Throw a nice Thule pod thing on top and were all good to go and will look cool while at it. I want to turn a blind eye to the bad stuff i read because i love the car but i don't want to be some jackass on the side of the road constantly with a great looking hunk of junk wasting money on excessive repairs.
With what i read - it just seems like they put junk out towards the latter years.
When SAAB was on the ropes, they were probably cutting specs on components like crazy to get the cars through the line and out the door so they can be sold and turned back into cash they desperately needed. In survival mode, that's what is done - screw the consumer, we'll deal with them later if were around... Edmunds has high marks for reliability but they take advertising dollars from GM. I know the game - i advertise for my company in different media - they don't to loose a nice contract. Product reviews are mostly BS designed to fluff and help sell product to keep the ad dollars flowing. It all doesn't jive with what people are writing.
So i put the question to fellow Saab owners. Real owners that are part of the community that can share their overall feelings about the 9-5 aero. Are these truly good cars or what? Are there years that are better than others? Someone level with me. Should i pick up this nice 02 Aero? All the writing is on the wall not to purchase one.
Help me make the call!
