sounds like there are 2 potential big expensive issues with the car: sludge + tranny.
Maybe both will be fine, but it's a gamble. I would take john b's advice above + find a car with neither issue. That said, sometimes an otherwise great car comes up with some problems that you can manage if the price is right. See link below to a recent thread re buying a potentially sludged 2003 Aero wagon. The car looked amazing in the photos + Robert could do an engine swap himself if need be. If you are like him, then maybe this car you are looking at is a great deal. If you are going to end up paying your indy to swap an engine + tranny, I would recommend you look at a newer (or better maintained) 9-5 + pay a little more up front.
If you are still keen on the car (in spite of our warnings) + want to do a quick + dirty sludge diagnostic before buying, the cheapest + easiest approach is to do the coathanger test. If you can get some "coffee grounds" out of the pan you'll have some more bargaining power... but lets face it, the seller is probably happy to wait for a sucker to come along...
