found an 02 aero with 89k auto and considering. good and bad.
Good - Gorgeous interior - seats, shifter, wheels have no wear at all. even the bolsters on the driver seat. No accident damage. Turbo is good-no smoke and lots of power. Fast car. engine runs nice. Drives well. AC and all electrical in order. Stereo awesome.
Bad - dealer auction purchase, no records. Rear springs sagging and tires are ruined - lots of road noise when driving. tracked down dealer that sold and serviced it. Records from 06' and back have been purged. all scheduled maintenance has been done incl. all recalls. But recorded oil chnages were 7-10k apart! whats up with that? Needs pcv6 breather kit update and it has oil seeping. needs serpentine belt and pulleys. Tires need to be changed. main thing is the tranny delays and clunks hard into drive. Shifts fine otherwise. Spoke to several sources. SAAB specialist. he said he did the reprogram which didnt work, then ran the pressure test and came to conclusion its the valve body. 1900 repair w/ new part, 1300 w used part.
Saab dealer service mgr said dont touch the car as there was a big chance of sludge from the changes on file and the tranny is going. They usually just replace the trannies and he said it is very common that the trannys go around 90k. He rattled through a number of examples. New trannys cost 2200 + labor. If i felt like it, he suggested popping the valve cover off and checking for sludge. He said if it looked like someone was mining coal in there to forget it. Even if it was physically cleand out of the pan and valve cover, it would still be in the engine and there can still be a lot of damage that was irreversible. His advise was to walk away from it as id end up spending more on repairs than on the car. It was his dealership that auctioned the car off.
Saab specialist just said that the valve body was updated and that if he checks the serial no's he can make sure to use the updated one and i should be good to go.
spoke to 2 separate tranny shops.
Shop 1 said, drive it the way it is until it gets real bad then do what needs to be done. He said not to flush it as it can cause problems. he suggested to check the battery b/c low batteries can cause tranny shifting issues since the hydraulic valves needed the correct volts to run. Popped my wifes 3 month old batter in teh car from her viggen (same battery) and no luck. probably 2500+ to repair
Shop 2 said, dont touch it and walk away from it as the parts and everything were astronomically expensive. can probably expect to pay around 3k for a rebuilt tranny w all labor in. If the dealer will put a new one in, then maybe, otherwise dont touch it.
Didnt pay the dealer or either tranny specialist for advice. They were all real nice and spent time on the phone talking to me giving me their honest opinions.
Paid the saab specialist. He's definitely a specialist, has worked on my Viggen, services a few other viggens, and has lots of cars there. Has great customer feedback, nice guy, knows his saabs, and is even into the old ones. Sells old ones, collects them, and just a strait up saab guy. asked him about the sludge and he said he'd drop the pan when it came time for an oil change and see what the deal was then. Dug into it more with him and he said dropping the oil pan was 3 hrs labor. If he found some, he'd pull the valve cover and check there - usually it is worse in the oil pan so that is where to look he said. He would be able to see whats going on in there and then we can get into some significant repairs depending on how bad it is. Worst case, to take apart the engine and clean it all is like 800 bucks at lease. That plus the cost of dropping the pan at 270 will start adding up quickly.
So in considering all the info, it seems that the only one that has anything really to gain is the saab specialist because he gains another car to work on and is the only true authority on all this stuff in our market. On the flip side, maybe he knows more than the saab dealer service manager and 2 tranny specialists??
What do you guys think?
