they are nice cars that were in production for a long time, which is good for parts availability. starting in 2004 they got some of the bugs worked out: a good pcv system + full synth from the factory, SID was changed + no longer drops pixels, DIC was better, though apparently not perfect! failure is maybe more "progressive" from what I have read here... A Viggen would likely be as at risk for sludge as a pre-2004 9-5... if you want to be sure, drop the pan... there is the Bob Bright pan available if you're paranoid etc...
The key is to find one that's been well maintained. And, well, if you want a wagon, that will mean searching far and wide - not that many come up for sale as everyone wants one...
imho, these are the ultimate touring car. Fantastic on the highway (fast solid, good mpg, completely effortless to drive, safe, comfortable, big tank)... around town, I prefer our c900s for the sharper cornering and more fun, but they can't beat a 9-5 on the highway! A Viggen + a 9-5 Aero would be a perfect set...
