how about finding a whole used transmission? Since it is "a second car that won't be used much" this might be a good way to go.
These trannies are generally pretty durable. Looking at car-part.com they seem to run from $700 to $1500. I'm not sure of the difference between an Aero and Linear/Arc tranny in '03, but it's maybe just ratios, so a non-Aero trans could be fine and even cost less.
$2000 or so seems OK if you can do the needed work yourself or at a reasonable cost. But do watch for a host of "gotchas" to crop up as the car doesn't seem to have been cared for. While the tranny is out I'd also drop the oil pan to check for sludge, as I'm betting oil changes may have been few and far between.
