That is exactly what I wonder. But also as I pointed out below, this will be a second car for use primarily around town. If it doesn't lock up correctly all that will happen is that I will lose some highway mpg. If you don't drive the highway much, it could take ten years to recoup the cost of a tranny rebuild or replacement. It is shifting fine. And now that the light is out and did not come back on after 50 miles of highway driving, this is quite perplexing. Was it a temporary solenoid malfunction? Was it a temporary internal slip?
As I pointed out below, if all of the repairs I think need to be done are done at a dealer and this were an insurance claim, the car would be a total loss. The service writer at Saab says to offer $2000 grand -- essentially a bit over salvage value. So that is what I intend to do -- perhaps kick it up to $2300.
