In late '08 I totaled my '02 Aero (143,000 miles) and replaced it with a CPO '08 Aero with 15,000 miles. I now have 99,000 miles, so I think I know both cars pretty well. The '08 has been pretty much bullet proof, but it is a 9-5, so the most common issues have surfaced. The rear suspension needed shims at 21,000 miles amazingly, but covered under warranty (the '02 needed this at 105,000 miles). The newer one needed the heater valve replaced at 60,000 miles, and the '02 needed the same at 84,000 miles. The '02 gave me fits with the transmission valve body issue, but that is fully resolved on later models.
As far as subjective observations, I finally think I like the styling of the '08 better now. The radio is straight from a Buick or Chevy, but it works well and is intuitive. Of course it includes satellite, but it is far superior than the '02 set up. The suspension is a tad tighter (harsher) on the '08, but not objectionable. The leather is not quite as soft on the '08, and I do miss the '02's super supple seats. You can tell that GM was slowly cutting costs where they thought they could. I do love the '08 rims and cleaner brake pads (less dust). I also love my '08 color - Titan Grey. The '02 was Steel Grey, and though I liked it, I think Titan Grey is fabulous.
In summary, I think the newer car is a bit better from a build standpoint, but by '08 they were starting to cut corners on non critical items. Next month I'll be at 100K miles!
