2004+ is probably the best bet, as it avoids having to look as much into the PCV history of the car... Otherwise, they're all getting older, so it's more about condition and maintenance now... There are probably very well maintained 2002's that would be cheaper to own going forward than poorly looked after newer cars...
I have a newer arc, so td04 turbo but no lowered suspension and no aero seats. That said, I have put konis on it, performance tires, etc... I prefer a little more clearance since we can get a lot of snow (and lower insurance), so I didn't shop Aeros... the ride in ours is comfortable with good handling. We have c900's and they are definitely more fun around town, taking corners etc, but the 9-5 is faster and overall better on the highway. In terms of handling, I noticed a big downgrade from c900 to OG9-3: the 9-3, while fast and lots of fun, does not handle anything as well as a c900 (eg try a fast S turn at speed like a moose test and note the difference in precision). The 9-5 has much more solid handling than the 9-3, comparable to the c900 or maybe even more so, but it is a bigger car, so the weight and size plays into the fun element of the handling a little, but otherwise it is great.
9-5 auto tranny works great. Not unlike OG 9-3.
overall, we love driving the 9-5. nothing else on the market really compares...
