Let's see, I learned to drive stick in a C900, and had a few of those in the family ('83, '87, '91...) and a couple of 9000s ('92 9000S, and '93 Aero) and my brother had a '97 900SE for a few years that I got to drive several thousand miles in, and my wife and I now have an '04 9-5 Aero wagon. It is the first automatic Saab we've had.
A couple of thoughts... The 9000 Aero remains my favorite, but the 9-5 is much more car in many ways.
Auto. vs. stick: Drive a 9-5 with an auto. That's the only way you'll know. I am still looking for a 9-5 Aero wagon with a stick, and I'd be very tempted to swap our current car for a manual car if the opportunity arises... I still prefer the stick, but the auto isn't bad. I don't think anyone can tell you which one you should get... it's too personal a choice. All i can say as that the auto isn't bad, but it's no replacement... and I say this knowing that Saab stick shifts aren't exactly the paragon of automotive stick-shift experience. I just enjoy the involvement that a stick gives. Now, if I sat in traffic every day, I might feel differently about it.
I say go for it. The 9-5 is a great car.
