Presently have 3.
My first SAAB was a 9-5 Aero SW bought new in 2002, haven't bought anything but SAAB's since.
To clear up a few things posted so far, the first year for the 5-spd auto was 2002, which also included some chassis changes (all models) in addition to front end freshening.
2004 and newer gets you some peace-of-mind regarding the PCV and sludge issue, but that is no guarantee, nor should pre-2004 be considered POS's.
Most SAAB's seem to be well cared for, if it's had PCV#6 for some time, and some service history, and sounds good, I would consider it.
Many will tell you that you HAVE to drop the pan before buying. That's not bad advice, assuming you're willing to drop a couple hundred $'s before purchasing. A simpler check, assuming it still has original turbo, is to check the oil supply tube to the turbo. If clean (and hasn't been replaced), I'd assume no sludge issue.
I don't know that you'd notice drive-ability difference between wagon and sedan, unless you're exceeding 9/10th's, although I have seen it posted here (long time ago) of the wagon/combi having the edge, due to closer 50/50. I LOVE the wagon/combi for the utility, hope to keep driving one for many more years, even if Bambi takes out this one, like my '02.
I don't really have complaints about the 4-Auto, but I think '02+ is the way to go. The gas-by-wire control (also included pre-2002) really allows the auto to respond quickly. I don't have much use for the paddle shifters, other than downshifting for grade descents. I suppose they could have uses at other times, but I consider them more of a gimmick.
The Aero suspension will ride rougher, and 17" contributes.
My '07 rides a LOT smoother than wife's 9-3, but that Aero has MUCH better handling. It really is a big difference, the car seems so much lighter.
good hunting
