Flappy paddle shifting vs. auto stick

Hi, I have a question about the flappy paddle shifter available on the 2003+ 9-5s. Is it any different in regards to the shifting vs. the auto-stick shifting? I have driven a 2007 9-3SS with the auto stick and don't like the way it shifts when the manual option is engaged, it seems slow, and sometimes thinks for itself. I have driven manuals all my life and swore I'd never driven auto, but sore hips and knees have me reconsidering whether the flappy paddle shifter would be OK.
