I like your comment - exactly my feelings!
I rented a jeep Patriot once with manually controlled CVT. By shifting manually one could pick from 6 preselected gear ratios - giving an impression of 6-speed. Of course, they could have just as easy made it 128-speed with a change of few lines of code.
