I gave an old SUV to my son for college - I completely self maintained it over the years. So a few summers ago I replaced the timing belt valve cover gaskets rebuilt a brake caliper and changed the axle gear oil.
This past winter he took it to a garage that is owned by the father of one of his school buddies because it wasn't going into 4 wheel drive.
The garage gives him an estimate of some $1,200 in repairs - brake caliper a diffentials and valve cover gaskets are all leaking and need replacement as does drive train control module.
So I don't bother to wipe up residual fluid from the caliper or the diffs and I tell my son to get his *ss under the car and look for any loose or split vacuum hoses to the 4 wheel drive axle - yes he finds one, split at the hose end, cuts .5" from the hose and the car is good to go. No seals or modules need replacing, no $1,200 repair bill.
You need to look very carefully at what a garage is telling you need and question everything and get a 2nd opinion . New head bolts may take car of the oil leak and should the timing chain be at the limit one can be rolled in at min cost as opposed to pulling the engine and replacing all of the guides and other stuff. Then just drive the car until something major breaks and then you can re-evaluate.
