I've used Wahler Thermostats in a Volvo 745T and changed one at 204k and another 295k just as a precaution. I changed the t-stat in this 9-5 as a precaution at 127k when I did the radiator. The t-stat housing was also weeping so the gasket had gone bad. Hard to believe the older t-stat was likely original and probably lasted nine years and this one lasts nine months. Why would a Wahler t-stat last 90k+ in a Volvo and only 9k in a Saab?
I tapped on the housing last night lightly with a hammer. My wife reports today that the gauge has gone back to reading normally although the CEL is still latched.
The radiator and upper hose were probably less than 100°F (surface temp) last night when she pulled in. The ambient air temp was 15°F. A 100°F surface temp is abnormally low for the radiator which typically is >125°F so I suspect the gauge and sender are OK but it's indeed the thermostat.
I've ordered an Op-Com reader so I'll be able to monitor the coolant temperature a little more closely. If it acts up again I'll be ready with a new t-stat (Motorad). I can report back on an exact surface temp for the radiator and codes.
