Thanks to all who replied. I agree that low ground clearance can be a problem when the snow is deep. But that has not been a problem for us. Being retired, we can just wait for the town plow to make a pass, then run the snowblower. The closest we came to getting stuck happened this past Christmas when we returned from a trip to find a 1 foot plow curl at the end of the driveway. I expected to get hung up, but she plowed right through it and on through 8" of snow up 140 feet of driveway. The new cars we are looking at all have way more ground clearance and probably better TCS than our Aero, so with good winter tires they should be fine for us with FWD. And like Tom wrote, AWD can get aggressive drivers going too fast to turn or stop.
