I agree completely. When I first put dedicated snows on our wagon (Blizzaks) I was absolutely astounded by the traction on snow and ice. With TCS and ESP I can't see what further benefit AWD would have for me in typical midwest driving. Possibly a car with AWD can provide acceptable winter driving with performance tires.
I personally wouldn't bother with AWD and just buy a set of dedicated wheels and snow tires for winter not to mention your alloys will look new for life. But then I buy cars new and fix and drive them forever- 2002 9-5 has 168,000 (youngster) and I've got a 20+ year old Jeep Cherokee with 248,000.
