Went from FWD 9-5 Aero to XWD Turbo-x. Never going back Posted by B Millar [Email] (#1109) [Profile/Gallery] (more from B Millar) on Mon, 24 Feb 2014 07:09:58 In Reply to: All vs. Front Wheel Drive, TonyJ [Profile/Gallery] , Sun, 23 Feb 2014 08:51:21 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I had a 2004 9-5 Aero, always put dedicated snows (General Altimax Arctics) on it. It was alright in the snow. I would still avoid driving in the nasty stuff though. My biggest beef with FWD was getting going, as others mentioned. It is stressful trying to pull out from a slushy intersection into traffic and not knowing if I may get stuck or how long it'll take to get out there.
This is my first winter season with the Turbo-X. It also has dedicated snows on it for winter. Gislaveds, I think. Now I LOOK for reasons to go out in bad weather. Holy smokes. Not only do I not worry about pulling out into traffic, I can do controlled drifts and fish-tails, watching snow rooster-tail from the rear tires. You can also turn the wheel and mash the gas to "steer" the back of the car. FWD now seems like a paralyzed dog in one of those wheel contraptions that keeps their rear legs suspended as they pull themselves along with their front legs. Not a pretty sight. I do still take my sweet time in turns and stopping, using engine braking to help. Still blows my mind how many idiots put their X5's and Escalades into the ditch.
Obviously XWD has its downfalls. MPG's, reliability, added maintenance expense, etc. I won't buy another XWD Saab, but I don't think I could buy another FWD daily driver. AWD has its uses on dry pavement too. I think an A4 or S60 AWD will be on the shopping list when the TX gives up.
