I had a number of c900s. The 9-5 is a different beast but overall will soon seem familiar to a c900 owner. It will feel bigger and is a little more clumsy (although since you have a '85 you won't notice that as much as you would with a later c900) but you will get accustomed. An Aero or Sport will give best handling. The 2nd generation 9-3 admittedly handles better and is a newer design but I settled on the 9-5 anyway. But when shopping used keeping options open and trying to find a good lower mileage car is key.
Later 9-5 cars should pretty much have sludge issues cured (search this board) and although some things might have been downgraded the 2006+ vehicles are supposed to handle a little better especially in non-Aero/non-Sport configurations. Personally I'd would prefer the 4 over the 6 to the point I wouldn't even look for a 6. BTW -the 2.3 is a timing chain not a belt (I can't remember for the 6).
In sedan form obviously not as practical as a 900 hatchback. The 9-5 is a better interstate cruiser and the c900 more satisfying two-lane hyw driver.
Look for the lowest mileage newest model you can afford especially if you plan to keep it long haul. Prices are pretty darn reasonable even on later vehicles it seems to me. I have a 2006 Sport (Sport is what they called the 2006 Aero in US) and it has been pretty much no fuss so far.
